On UrbanDictionary, it automatically generates a list of words related to the word you looked up. Notice anything?

Google image search “uppity” and look at the screen. Notice anything?

Seriously. “Uppity” has racist implications. Referring to the President of the United States — the person who’s at the peak of the government hierarchy — as “uppity” is racist.

YES i use urban dictionary as a real source for my social education. i’ve seen it cited in so many scholarly publications recently…

to be fair, uppity is never a nice term, whether or not it’s being used as a racist term. it’s an insult. but context matters. the source matters. 

i’m sick of this ‘insulting a man who is black automatically means it’s racist’ shit. 

I looked on JSTOR and found that 18 recent scholarly publications used UrbanDictionary.com in their papers. Guess we aren’t reading the same things?

YES, context matters. YES, the source matters. That’s why this is racist!! Just because YOU didn’t know it was racist does not erase its historical context, or stuff like this, where we can see that its current colloquial use is tied closely to perceptions of the Black community.

the weak leaders of the Democratic party turning on Weiner, I guess, should be no surprise, but if the internet, and specifically the left leaning Tumblr Users, have also backed down then that’s absolutely pathetic.

People can agree or disagree with his politics all they want but THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS what Weiner did was an issue for two people: him and his wife. 

“DUHH BUT HE LIED ABOUT IT.” You ignorant shit, I don’t know when we adopted such high standards for politicians but if you’re hiding behind this you’re completely full of it.

So, we ruled out “lying.”  All that’s left is his supposed “affair.”  Look, he didn’t cheat on his wife.  At least, within any definition that the general public should be worried about.  If his wife thinks he did, that’s for her to decide. 

People like the above GIF maker and commentator don’t like that he was caught with his pants down.  Maybe they’re parents and, like the great Louis CK bit goes, they’re too afraid to talk to their shitty kids for 5 minutes to say, “don’t send sexts, you fucking idiot, this is what happens.”  Maybe they decided, like the rest of Tumblr seems to, that NOW personal choices are worth crucifying people.  I’ve read the defense of some fucked up shit on this blogsite that I will probably never understand, so the fact that I can’t get away from people turning their back on Weiner on here is really just beyond mind boggling. 

Get your fucking shit together, friends.  Seriously.

Apparently Reese Witherspoon asking people to adopt higher starndards is worth throwing complete and utter fits over, but literally within 24 hours Tumblr Users can turn their back on someone for basically doing exactly what Reese discouraged.
